What are your passions?

  • Family: My wife and kids are probably my biggest passion in life. Making sure they are happy, healthy and having fun are very important to me.

  • Learning: I am constantly trying to learn new things outside of my normal day to day skill set. Recent examples include wood and metal working, electronics, photography, gardening and machining.

  • Creating: Creating things is what I love to do. I create software as part of my job. That's a given. But I also love to create things using skills I've only recently acquired and am still developing. I created a hydroponic garden from scratch using common components found at the hardware store. It allowed me to have an herb and vegetable garden while living in the desert southwest, where growing in the ground is pretty much impossible. I also completely rebuilt an old 1930s lathe that wasn't running and now have a fully operational lathe.

What are your pet peeves?

My biggest pet peeves are people who whine and complain about things that are self controllable. For example don't tell me you never have time to do anything new or fun, but at the same time do nothing but watch TV from dinner until bed time.

What will you think about during your final days?

During my final days, I will probably be thinking about the life and legacy I've left behind for my kids, and their kids, and their kids kids. How have decisions and actions I've made during my lifetime affected my kids and how they live their own lives.

What has been a turning point in your life?

One of the biggest turning points for me (and my family) was becoming debt free. It's amazing how different life is when you don't have the weight of debt hanging over you.
